Egg Color: Dark Brown / Chocolate
Purpose: Eggs / Meat
Cold Hardy: Yes
Classification: Heavy, Soft Feather
The Maran is a large and strong-looking chicken, tough and disease-resistant, they are quiet and docile. Maran adapt well to free-range rearing in rough terrain, but will tolerate confinement fairly well. The hens are good setters and mothers.
The Maran lay deep brown color eggs, sometimes with dark speckles. (Please remember though, the hens that lay the darkest eggs also lay the fewest, the quicker the egg passes through the system the lighter the shell color.)
In the UK, clean legged birds are the standard. In France and the US both clean legged and sparsely feathered legs are recognized.
Our chickens have feathered legs (French Strain).
